School Lunch
We all remember school lunch…some of us brought it with us, some of us traded for better items, some of us bought what we wanted from the cafeteria (hello chicken patties and chocolate juniors), some of us had parents who packed our lunches with hippy food and nasty food alike, some of us bought our lunch from the chinese place across the street from school (which usually didn’t sell much chinese food), and some of us also got it free…

But at what cost was that free lunch? Most of the time—well, basically all the time—free lunch in the Philadelphia Public School System is an entirely unhealthy combination of foods. A typical free lunch in Philadelphia consists of small portions of high-fat, highly processed, not-so-good-tasting, sugary foods. Just the kinds of food kids should not be eating if they want to concentrate in class, let alone live long, healthy lives. What is wrong with this picture?? Our children should be fed simple, healthful, and delicious foods for lunch. In school. For free. This does not mean each child in the city of Philadelphia needs to eat homemade hummus and bullsh***t fancy tossed salads, it just means that school lunches should be at least be fresh, non-toxic, tasty, and healthful.
